As I mentioned at last night's dorkbot (Tue 18 Nov 2008) a bunch of us are planning to get together for some Arduino based robot hacking. Exact format and dates are yet to be arranged.

Let's use this wiki so that we have a bit more room to spread out, kick ideas around and organise things - both for this and anything else dorkbot related.

Anyone can create an account, and then create and edit as they see fit. Please rollback any spam that you see.

The doodle poll for weekend versus evenings is at http://bit.ly/info/3PWw. Evenings seems to have a clear majority so I guess we now need to think about:

  • which evening, which dates and how many;
  • a venue - pervasive media studio might be a good bet; update: Clare Reddington has given us the nod for this
  • a theme - robot feral dogs or something else;
  • how to structure it - freeform collaborative hacking, led/facilitated by somebody, organised into teams? etc.

  • If it is going to be led/facilitated by someone, is there anyone willing to do this?
  • What are everyones passions and what do they want to achieve out of the evening?
  • Can I vote for not Tuesday evening.

  • If we're going to get down to hardcore soldering, drilling and the like, we'll need a venue where that kind of thing is acceptable. There may be health and safety issues with some places. Also, some fire alarm systems might not take kindly to solder smoke. Actually, thinking about it, we'll need fume extraction just to use a soldering iron at all.

Some Robot Resources

I have some bits and pieces here which may (or may not) be useful or interesting. Firstly, I have a fairly complete Cybot, the robot that was sold in monthly installments with the "Real Robots" magazine. I also have two incomplete Cybots that I got from FreeCycle. I don't have, however, a full set of the magazines that explain them.

For more hard-core robot building, I have the programmer gadget for Atmel AVR microcontrollers. Does anybody have a PIC programmer? Or any other type of microcontroller programming unit?

Update: at the Linux User Group meeting, I was loaned a chassis from a radio-controlled toy, the Hitari Tumbler. It has four big off-road style wheels/tyres, which are driven by two motors (left and right). The front wheel on each side is geared to the rear wheel, and to its respective motor. This makes for a differential drive steering setup, although the original toy only had "go" and "turn" commands. I'll see what I can make of it...
